Anonymous asked: What's wrong with Freud? I don't know much about him other than he was a famous psychologist...
Answer: Oh, anon, I don’t think you are prepared for this rant. *cracks knuckles* BUT SINCE YOU ASKED…
Well, I mean, first of all, the dude’s been dead for… what, 70 years now? Psychology has come a long way in 70 years. Do you want to trust century-old psychology? Psychology has a violent history. Anything going on that long ago has long since been discredited and has evolved so much. There are psychiatric practices even from the early 90s most professionals today wouldn’t touch with a 30-foot pole.
The guy was a complete Freud… I mean Fraud. He had little to no evidence to back up any of this theories. Modern psychology has tried to back up some of his claims to come up with absolutely nothing because he was pulling so much out of his ass. He also considered the mind as non-existent, and therefore he said it could not be directly observed.
The guy was so blatantly sexist that he may as well have been wearing a #Meninist t-shirt to all of this psychotherapy sessions. He insisted that a woman’s “hysteria” was based on (casual cissexism tw) what he called “penis envy.” According to Fraud (I’m sorry, Freud), a woman’s problem is that she doesn’t have a penis. If she had a penis, she would have power. A woman’s hysteria is based in her jealousy of the man. And also because of this, women aren’t able to develop a proper ego, so they’re “underdeveloped” in some way… He also believe women to be sexually passive, only seeking out sex in order to have children, specifically wanting a male child in order to “gain a penis.” Because all women have “penis envy."
Freud also had a bad habit of basing all basic human behavior on what he observed in sex and violence. The guy was obsessed with sex. He was insistent that boys all want to fuck their mothers and hate their fathers, despite having no evidence of this. His theory on psychosexual theories borders on pedophilia.
He was also blatantly homophobic. He believed homosexuality was caused by a boy being over-attracted to his own mother, causing him to desire feminine things and then eventually become a man-lover himself.
Freud also studied sexual abuse cases in children, noting most of them were girls abused by their fathers, which made him form the seduction theory. He believed that little girls were seducing their fathers and were the cause of their own abuse. Penis envy again?
He also treated patients with cocaine, believing it the the one-all cure-all for mental illnesses and only abandoned it when he realized his patients were all getting addicted to the shit. In fact, there are no verifiable records of any patient of Freud’s being successfully treated by him.
I’m sure I’m forgetting a few things, so a few people may want to add a few things, but honestly Freud took the study of psychology backward instead of forward. The guy was a complete joke, and sure some of his work still has some influence on today’s psychology but today’s psychology isn’t exactly stellar.
