Anonymous asked: I'm 15 and I've had nearly all of the symptoms for BPD since very early in my childhood. I'm starting to see a psychiatrist again in December and I was curious on how I could bring up the possibility of BPD nicely so he will listen to me and take it into consideration? or should I just not ask about it at all?
Answer: Keep in mind you may not get a diagnosis, but that can’t keep you from getting treatment for your symptoms. While it is possible to be diagnosed as a minor, some psychiatrists outright refuse to diagnose it. This being that right now, if you have BPD, it’s still in its early stages. Which, honestly, makes it all the more important for professionals to address it and treat it! BPD is worst during your early 20s so if you get treatment now, you may miss the shitstorm.
Bring up your symptoms. Say you’ve done research on BPD and have related to posts about it. Hell, even mention that you came to a blog like this one and talked to and read posts by people with BPD and related to things they were saying! Even if your psychiatrist doesn’t give you the diagnosis, ask about getting treatment for the symptoms you’re experiencing. What you’re going through is still valid, whether you get the shiny label of a diagnosis or not.
I actually really hate how a lot of professionals are like, “Well, you’re a MINOR.” It’s so invalidating! Like okay your BPD may not be at its peak yet, but that makes it SO MUCH MORE IMPORTANT to treat you now and help you! So yes, my advice is to talk to your psychiatrist! Even if you don’t get the diagnosis, it’s super important that you treat your symptoms now before they get worse. x
