Anonymous asked: Hey, so what would all of you say about getting officially diagnosed? Like, I have known something has been wrong with me for many years and I have only now figured out what it could be (BPD because I fit like all of it) but after nearly a decade of having my entire being being devalued, I feel this need to have a label for it. But I'm also terrified of the stigma surrounding it and how it will negatively affect my life especially since I'm 19 and in college. Any advice please? Thank you guys.
Answer: This really depends on your unique situation whether or not a professional diagnosis would help you. If you are trans and need access to HRT, avoiding a diagnosis would probably be in your best interest. If you are in an abusive situation and may require the resources of an abuse shelter, avoiding a diagnosis would be in your best interest, as many abuse shelters turn down people with personality disorders. If you have many financial burdens and are at risk of becoming homeless, avoiding a diagnosis would be in your best interest, as homeless shelters will discriminate against certain mental disorders. You may also want to research health clinics, etc. in your area and see if they treat personality disorders, as I have tried to get therapy from a clinic once and was turned away because they “didn’t want to deal with personality disorders.”
Otherwise, a professional diagnosis could be potentially life-saving. Getting professional help can be a great experience, and getting into DBT or some other form of therapy to treat your symptoms could be life-changing and well worth considering. A professional diagnosis can also be incredibly validating, and a good therapist will be able to offer help you otherwise can’t find here or anywhere else. I had one good therapist, and my time with her literally saved my life. x
