Anonymous asked: Found out about bpd a while ago and it makes me happy 'cause I feel like it really describes me and idk if that makes me a bad person 'cause you shouldn't be happy about finding out that you might have a personality disorder? but it feels like I finally fit in somewhere and that there is help to get when I turn 18 and can get a real diagnosis instead of constantly getting thrown into the emergency room and then getting told to go home 'cause i'm just overreacting. sorry just wanted to share
Answer: There are a variety of emotions someone can feel upon finding a diagnosis that fits them, and happiness and relief aren’t uncommon ones. When I was diagnosed, I was terrified because most of my knowledge of BPD was the stigmatized part of it. However, when I learned more about it, the diagnosis became comforting because I finally had a word for what I was experiencing. You know what labels I used for myself before “borderline”?
“Broken.”
“Malfunctioning.”
“Monster.”
And then suddenly, I fit in somewhere, and I didn’t feel like a monster anymore. You are not at all a bad person for feeling happy about the diagnosis. For a lot of us, it was comforting.
