so im a minor and i have more than half of the symptoms of bpd and my therapist says that shes going to treat me for bpd so the symptoms dont develop any further... but is it even possible to prevent getting bpd? especially if i qualify for having it now?
Answer: One of the top treatments for BPD is DBT, which teaches you new skills and coping methods, which is probably the therapy or a similar therapy you’ll be treated with. The earlier you learn them and are treated when you have bpd or have bpd traits, the easier it is for you to control and cope with symptoms later on in life.
I can’t say for sure if it will prevent your symptoms from getting worse, but I do know that if I had access to BPD specific therapy as a minor, I would be struggling a lot less right now as a 22 year old. You may be qualified for BPD right now, I can’t say for sure since I dont know you. Regardless, you receiving treatment now will only help you in the future and will only make things easier as you grow up and face new challenges.
It’s tougher growing up with untreated and even undiagnosed bpd because we’re lost and struggling and dont know why. If I was able to have the tools they teach in DBT when I was 16, the challenges I faced and my experiences with symptoms when I moved away, when I started dating, when I started college, etc, would be so much easier. It’s better to problem solve when you know why things are happening (knowing you have BPD and what that means) and how to solve them (the tools and skills you get through DBT).
Good luck! I hope things go well
