Anonymous asked: I checked the FAQ but I'm sorry I still don't understand what this means: "I have cognition problems and difficulty perceiving myself, other people, and events." Gosh, I feel stupid but could you maybe explain this more in depth?
Answer: I’ve had difficulty understanding this one as well. You’re not stupid; it’s just confusing. Everything written about it is written in very scholarly terms. I’ve found like two sources that explained it in a way that made sense to me.
The simplest I can explain it is that we have difficult taking what we see, hear, feel, etc and using it to learn. We have difficulty recognizing patterns, connections, cause and effect, and significance. For example, I would notice that I would have days that I was incredibly anxious. I just accepted them as bad mental health days. After a few years, I was finally able to connect the fact that I’d gone to sleep late with waking up in an anxious mood. This is part of why Radical Acceptance also teaches that every event has a cause.
I found this quote from a page for employers:
“Cognition” refers to “understanding” – the ability to comprehend what you see and hear, and to infer information from social cues and body language. People with these impairments may have trouble learning new things, making generalizations from one situation to another, and expressing themselves through spoken or written language.
Cognition problems would also include difficulty focusing, poor memory (both long term and short term), time management, etc.
I hope this clears things up! If you need any more clarification, feel free to ask!
