Anonymous asked: Hi, I looked at the faq but didn't find anything relating to my question (and if it is there adn I missed it, sorry!) do you have any advice on how to deal with therapists/doctros who refuse to consider comorbidity and blame everything on your bpd??? like i was told no you cant have depression you just have bpd and cause you're fat you're jsut lazy not depressed?
Answer: Condolences on the rubbish doctors and therapists you seem to be dealing with!
I can think of a few options that might be helpful to you:
1. If seeking another doctor or therapist is possible I would look into it. I do understand that waiting times and changing doctors can be quite extensive however and this might be something you don’t feel you can wait for. It might even be helpful to look for mental health specific therapists/doctors and be able to have a brief chat with them before committing to their service to check that they are not going to make the same mistakes with you that your current ones are.
2. You could print off reputable information about co-morbidity and bring it in to show your doctors and/or therapist. In relation to the above, if you are feeling confident enough, it might be helpful for you to say to them that you will be looking elsewhere for help unless they take what you are saying into consideration.
3. If your therapist is part of an agency you should be well within your rights to request another therapist if you feel this one isn’t providing the service you require. I am from the UK and this is how it works for our counsellors and I am assuming this is correct for the U.S and other places too.
I also want to say I’m sorry you’ve had to deal with what sound like insulting and unhelpful services. Being told you are fat because you are lazy is completely inappropriate and unprofessional and you’d be entitled to state that to them. You are entitled to professional help, not unprofessional snide remarks and brush off comments blaming BPD for everything. Your thoughts and feelings are valid and deserve to be explored and given weight. While you have not indicated either way in your message I just want to reassure you you have very much been wronged in this situation and you are doing nothing wrong yourself.
I hope you can find the help you require.
