Anonymous asked: My therapist refuses to diagnose me with bpd, even though I meet all the diagnostic criteria and it just makes me feel so invalid and I totally split on him because of it. I don't know what to do...
Answer: There are all sorts of reasons you may not be diagnosed with BPD, so I can’t help you with getting a professional diagnosis. Just remember that diagnosis is a tool, not a rule, and you don’t need the label to have your symptoms taken seriously. What’s important is that your symptoms are being treated in therapy. Therapists withhold diagnoses for all sorts of reasons, which we’ve gone over on this blog before, so it may be worth bringing up your concerns with him and letting him know the label so you can identify yourself is important to you. You can ask him why he doesn’t want to diagnose you. It could be that he thinks you have something else.
